Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the type 1 diabetes charity, improving lives until we find the cure.  Over 400,000 people in the UK live with type 1, 34,000 of them in Scotland.  Type 1 can develop at any age and is an autoimmune condition where the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed.  Without insulin, the body cannot control its blood glucose levels, which is life threatening if not treated promptly.

Our key mission is to drive world-class research to develop cures and improve the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and increase access to life-changing type 1 technologies and treatments.   JDRF has been at the forefront of all major breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research in the past 50 years. One current example of this is a very exciting research project at the University of Edinburgh, led by Dr Helen Colhoun, which has the potential to prevent the risk of long-term complications from type 1 diabetes.

We play a vital role in educating and empowering people with type 1 diabetes with information and support for everyone affected by the condition including at diagnosis, which is a life-changing event.  We aim to provide this through all stages of life with community engagement activity taking place throughout Scotland.

Our campaigning work raises awareness and keeps type 1 diabetes high on political agendas and in the public eye.

Please join us in our mission to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.
